France’s hopes in the 2026 Women’s Six Nations have taken a hit with the confirmed absence of star centre Gabrielle Vernier for the remainder of the tournament. The French Rugby Federation announced that Vernier, a fixture in France’s midfield, will miss all remaining matches as she recovers from an AC joint dislocation in her shoulder.

Injury During Milestone Appearance

Vernier sustained the injury during her 60th international cap, leaving the field in the 48th minute of France’s commanding 38-7 victory over Wales at Cardiff Arms Park. That match featured tries from Madoussou Fall Raclot, Manae Feleu, Lea Murie, and two from Anaïs Grando, securing a comfortable win and keeping France second in the table behind England.

The 28-year-old was replaced by Teani Feleu after what was initially described as an apparent injury. Both Vernier and the French Rugby Federation later confirmed via social media and official statements that she had suffered an AC joint dislocation. The setback came as France looked to build momentum following two consecutive wins, having already beaten Italy in their opening round at Grenoble.

Head coach Francois Ratier called Vernier’s absence a significant blow to the squad. France had already lost another key centre, Joanna Grisez, who suffered a knee ligament injury during their opening match against Italy. These injuries have tested the depth of Ratier’s squad as the tournament progresses.

Squad Changes Ahead of Ireland Clash

With Vernier ruled out, Ratier has called up 18-year-old Aelig Tregouet to join the squad ahead of their third-round fixture against Ireland in Clermont-Ferrand at Stade Marcel-Michelin. Tregouet, who plays for Toulouse, has represented France in sevens but is uncapped at senior level in 15-a-side rugby.

Tregouet’s addition comes amid other notable changes in France’s backline. Despite her 20 caps, Nassira Kondé has not been included in this year’s Six Nations squad. Kondé started during France’s World Cup semi-final against England and played in the bronze medal match against New Zealand, but has not been selected for this campaign.

France are also without former co-captain Marine Ménanger, who retired after last year’s Women’s Rugby World Cup, where France finished fourth at Allianz Stadium. With both Grisez and Vernier sidelined, Ratier is relying on emerging talents like Tregouet to fill critical roles as the championship enters its latter stages.

Grand Slam Race Intensifies

France currently sit second in the Women’s Six Nations standings behind reigning world champions England, having won their opening matches against Italy and Wales. Their next test comes on Saturday when they host Ireland, a team they defeated in last year’s World Cup quarter-finals, in what promises to be a crucial fixture for their campaign.

After facing Ireland, Les Bleues travel to Scotland before a potential Grand Slam decider against England on 17 May. The loss of both Vernier and Grisez leaves France with limited experience at centre as they attempt to challenge for this year’s title.

Matches are being broadcast across major networks, including BBC in the UK and France TV domestically. As anticipation builds toward a possible showdown with England, all eyes will be on how France adapt to these enforced changes within their squad.

Vernier confirmed her AC joint dislocation via Instagram after leaving the field against Wales, ending her tournament after reaching her milestone 60th cap.
